BLUF, Don’t Bluff Your Interview
So, you’ve got the interview – congrats! All that hard work on your CV and covering letter paid off. Now comes the interview itself. It’s normal to feel excited and a bit nervous, but remember when you’re getting ready: be direct, be honest – don’t try to bluff*.
*to bluff: to lie about something, to make you sound better at something than you really are!!
Okay, hands up! I’ve only just come across the term BLUF in the business world, but it immediately clicked for me how perfect this approach is for job interviews!
BLUF means “Bottom Line Up Front.” It’s a way of talking in business that means to be clear and get straight to the point. And that’s exactly how you should be in your job interview.
Think of it like this: start with the most important piece of information first, like the result or outcome of a project. It saves time, grabs attention, and makes things clear.
Why Being Direct (Using BLUF) Works in Interviews:
It makes your best qualities stand out: By clearly saying your most important skills and experiences early on, you make sure the interviewer doesn’t miss what makes you a good fit.
It makes you look confident and trustworthy: Being direct and honest makes you seem self-assured. Trying to bluff can quickly fall apart and hurt your credibility.
It shows you respect the interviewer’s time: Interviewers are usually really busy. Getting straight to the point with clear answers shows you’re professional and value their time.
How to Use the “Bottom Line Up Front” Idea in Your Interview:
Prepare short and clear answers: Have a think about the main things you want to say for each question.
Practise saying them clearly and briefly. Start with the main point: When you answer, say the most important thing first, then give some details.
Use numbers: Instead of saying “I made things better,” say “I increased sales by 15%.”
So, when you go to your next job interview, remember to be direct and honest, and clearly show what you can offer the company.
Don’t try to bluff and make things up. Instead, BLUF – Being yourself and being clear will make you a stronger candidate.
Good luck with your next interview!!!
